Chapter 10

A tticus

TWENTY YEARS LATER…

I grin as my wife grips me harder, her little fingers holding my jacket so tight that she’s almost choking me. We’re back on Aulavik National Park, our island, headed back to our cabin. We’ve been back a few times over the years, but now that our son is headed off to college, we can head back and spend more time where it all began.

I’ve retired from the ranger service, and Pen only writes when she feels like it. She’s finished twelve books so far and I couldn’t be prouder of her. She dedicates each one to her dad, our son, and to me, and I love to see that page in each of her books.

The island is just like I remember it. They closed down the ranger station out here shortly after I left the post. I don’t think that they could get anyone else to take it over, but they just said that it was a waste of money since the island gets so few visitors. You can still rent the cabins out though and I called in a favor to get our old cabin for the next month.

We cruise by the spot where she first tackled me, and I grin — my little adventurer. I can’t believe that all of this started as a hunt for a yeti. I still chuckle every time I remember how we met and fell in love.

We’ve had a lot of adventures over the course of our marriage. The birth of our son, Mark, our move to the mainland, promotions, travel, and so much more. I can’t imagine how boring and lonely my life would have been if I had never met her. Luckily for me, she went out of her comfort zone and found me, rescued me from my monotonous life.

I pull the snowmobile up to the front of the cabin and help my wife off, carrying her up the front steps and into our cabin. Pen laughs at me as I carry her over the threshold and kick the door shut behind us.

“Welcome home, Pen,” I murmur as I carry her into the bedroom. She sighs as she lays her head against my shoulder, and I smile, carrying my whole world in my arms.

“I love you, Pen. So much,” I say as I lay her down and come down over her.

“I love you more, Atticus,” she says as our lips meet.
